Billed as U.K. TV's answer to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed, the supernatural drama Hex plays more like a coming-of-age story dressed in Gothic trappings. Christina Cole stars as Cassie Hughes, a young girl enrolled at Medenham Hall, a private school that once housed a coven of witches. Cassie, who struggles to fit in with her elitist and over-sexed classmates, discovers that she's even less like them than she thought when she develops telekinetic powers. The onset of these powers attracts the attention of Azazeal (Michael Fassbinder), leader of the Nephilim (the fallen angels of the Bible). What follows is a broad and frequently stylish soap opera that pits Cassie and her roommate Thelma (Jemima Rooper, who steals many scenes), who happens to be a ghost, against Azazeal as he attempts to control Cassie's body and soul--quite literally, as his plan is to impregnate her in order to allow the other Nephilim to invade the corporeal world. Cutting dialogue a la Buffy and a hip soundtrack should hook American viewers, as will a smattering of nudity and violence and surprisingly solid special effects. The three-disc set features the first six episodes of the first season and four from the second, and includes include a 23-minute documentary on the making of the series with interviews with the cast and creators, as well as a small collection of deleted scenes. -- Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars Now Give Me Season 2 !!!!   July 5, 2009
C'est Moi
I love this show!

It's got everything: Quirky British people, an attractive blonde, a cute lesbian ghost, a mean girl, angels & demons...what more could you want for $40?

It made me want to push Buffy into the Hellmouth!

Where is Season 2 on Region 1 DVD? Anyone?

4 out of 5 stars A randy British tale delving into....read on!   June 8, 2009
clinky (ma)
A randy little story of a group of sex-starved coming of age students of a boarding school who stumble onto (to their misfortune) witchcraft, ghosts and satans top "generals" that are out for Cassie (mostly) and any other recruits they can find and, to their surprise, some recruits are those least likely to be possessed so grab yer bottle of st.johns wart and warm up to the telly! (some substance abuse & sexual situations)

4 out of 5 stars The Best Lesbian Ghost In TV History   May 11, 2009

The first season of Hex IS the series: forget season two, a decline into utter ruination and un-watchability. But while it lasted season one of Hex gave us some bloody good television. You never knew what to expect. Not only was it inventive as little else before it had ever been with its taboo-breaking plotlines, moody settings and overall excellence, but it carried with it the eye-widening shock of seeing characters you assumed were indispensable fixtures die right before your eyes. Yep, with Hex you never knew what was coming next. In my view, for my money, this is episodic greatness. Let others tell you more if they choose, I just stopped in as a proud owner of these DVD's to spend a second praising one of my all-time faves.

I hesitated for a long time to buy this tv box set, and I regret every day that I didn't already have it. I finally broke down and watch some episodes on youtube, and found it so enthralling, that I rushed to amazon and ordered it with rush shipping!

Now that I have gotten the box set in, I'm trying to get season two, soundtracks, t-shirts, you can imagine! I wish the producers would put it back on the air so I can order more seasons as they come out!!!

1 out of 5 stars I wanted to like this, but. . .   January 4, 2009

I am so sorry, after all of the online hype I REALLY wanted to like this. I was finally able to catch the first 7 episodes here in the states on BBC America & I was disapointed. The idea was there, even if it was ripped off from Anne Rice & her Mayfair witches, even the atmousphere and setting was pretty decent, and no one can really speak badly of Thelma. However I am a true fan of this genre and I have been spoiled by the high quality of the X-files and Buffy the vampire slayer. After experincing what Chris Carter and Joss Wheden have given the world in paranormal storytelling I am appalled that this dreck could so easily satisfy so many. Hex is awful!

The character's are not particularly interesting or sympathetic due to a severe lack of development - this blame can go on the writer's. It shouldn't be a welcome relief when a main character "bites it", as we say over here, however when Ella sticks it to Cassie we find ourselves really applauding a situation for the very first time in this show - SEVEN EPISODES IN!

This show left me bored and unimpressed, Thank God it only took two episodes of x-file reruns to make me forget most of this. It is offensive to us that this show would liken itself to Buffy or any of our paranormal/SciFi shows. When it comes to murder mysteries no one can hold a candle to the brits. However the paranormal/SciFi genre is better left to the Yanks.
