first and only comprehensive book on this historic town November 19, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is another book by well known author of peoples and places of Cyprus Kevork K. Keshishian. It can be said without hesitation that it is the first ever attempt in not just English but in any language to tackle many aspects of this historical as well as politically controversial town of Famagusta and its region. In fact it is so comprehensive as regard to its district that it can be said to have neglected the town itself a bit.The ancient walled town which deserves better treatment remains exactly the same as it was in author's other book Everybody's Guide to Romantic Cyprus ,first published 1946.Maps and many pictures are also from this earlier work. This is perhaps the weakest point of the book. There is no new information about the predecessor of Famagusta town Arsinoe and not enough about conflicts or otherwise experienced by Turkish and Greek communities there. This would have clarified the present situation.Bibliography is not there which is a neccesity for such works. Not withstanding it is the only volume that contains so much on this colourful town of Famagusta.
