| Editorial Reviews:
Description Does globalization eradicate local cultures, or do people embrace global products while maintaining their own style? The film Diablos Rojos: Los Buses de Panama explores this question by using the bus as a symbol. Theoretical directions in anthropology (symbolism, postmodernism, heteroglossia) are used to make a film. The Panamanian context is preserved through detailed English subtitles (which allow viewers to hear Panamanian Spanish), and through the medium of description (buses are described through gossip, a typical Panamanian way of gathering information). Anthropological thick description in the form of layers of interviews with people from all walks of Panamanian life are interspersed with postmodern sensory imagery of bus rides. This ethnographic documentary discusses transportation, globalization, and the expression of Panamanian cultural identity.
