One of the most distinctively different perennials for containers or the shade garden, this Mediterranean species offers beautifully striped, hooded "blooms" (actually spathes) with merrily curled, protruding "mouse tails" (spadices). The perfect accent for the spring garden, A. vulgare is a fascinating aroid that may well become the talking point of your garden.The flowers appear in mid- and late spring, 4 inches long and held upright. The entire structure (spathe and spadix) is actually a modified bract on a tall stem on plants 12 inches high, 6 to 9 inches wide. It is pale green to cream, with celery-green stripes on the exterior, tawny to maroon stripes on the interior, and an amber-brown spadix, curled and long, protruding from the opening at the top of the hooded spathe.
